Not that you should do that, but that is the way *nix systems work. Keep in mind that the AIR's design is heavily centered around security and within that constraint I believe AIR brings quite a lot to the desktop. I have been looking at using AIR for a client application where the data source is a system that provides an API interface (for C, .Net and Java) and so AIR wont be suitable (without hacks).
